Typesetting

Timeline: 4 weeks

Role: Editor, Graphic Designer

This booklet explores Carl Dair’s “Contrast of Vernacular Type,” with a particular emphasis on typesetting and layout design. We embarked on this creative journey by delving into the world of typography present in the signage all around us, capturing photographs that allowed us to explore various lettering forms.

DESIGN PROCESS STAGE 01:

The creative journey began by delving into the world of typography present in the signage all around, capturing photographs that allowed for the exploration of various lettering forms. This extensive exploration eventually led to the selection of individual letters from these typographic specimens, totaling 26 alphabets. These letters were carefully curated and transformed into black and white images, serving as the foundation for identifying diverse type contrasts and combinations.

TYPE PAIRING

ABOUT THE TYPES

Proxima Nova is a modern sans-serif designed by Mark Simonson as a rework of Proxima Sans. The type is mainly used for its clean and contemporary look.

The second typeface for this booklet is Gill Sans. This type is designed by Eric Gill in 1920s and Nova was an updated version of the original but with more weights and styles. The typeface is a combination of sans-serif and serif, best known for its versatility in design.

WHY THE TYPE PAIRING

The type pairing for this booklet was Proxima Nova and Gill Sans Nova. Proxima Nova was mostly used within headlines and titles. It is a modern and clean typeface that stands out. Gill Sans Nova was used for body text and longer passages. Its humanist design and balance make it very legible which is important for readability in long blocks of text. The contrast of Proxima Nova and Gill Sans creates a visual hierarchy as Proxima is more bold and Gill Sans is good for body text.

DRAFTS & FEEDBACK

There were two drafts of this booklet, majority of the feedback received were fairly minor. The problems revolved around spacing, making an emphasis on new paragraph, and refining the image trace on certain letters.

On the left is an example of what feedbacks and editing phase looked like. During draft two, more exploration with type setting and layout was played with. There was positive comments on the back cover page, people liked the layout and design of putting the two typefaces together.
